I found it one misty morning.
As I walked to clear my head.
I was dreaming through the night
Some dreams of joy and some of dread.
Rustling in the herbs and grass
I heard a tiny sound
and when I tried to follow it
it scuttled underground.
But still I followed on
It was a gently pulsing hum
and suddenly up popped an elf
who smiled and bade me 'Come',
He led me to a babbling brook
and on the other side
I hardly dared to take a look,
such beauty met my eyes.
The greens were greener there
than any I have ever seen.
The sky above was bluer too
All dreamy, creamy, softest hue.
I felt such peace come over me
I really could have cried.
It's true the grass was greener
but on the other side.
The elf just grinned and whispered
so that only I could hear.
'I will show you how to reach it,
just stay with me, my dear'.
And there before my eyes
was a footbridge, gnarled it was,
very old and very small in size.
but my friend the elf took me across
and for a little while
I soaked up the sun, enjoyed myself
as he told me with a smile.
'Come back when things crowd in on you.
I'll always be your guide,
to take you for a sojourn
upon the other side.'
I woke for real right then
feeling fresh and bright.
Thanks to that lovely friendly elf
who helped me through the night.
